Background and ethics
You are invited to take part in a research study with the University of Western Australia investigating the relationship between dreams, nightmares, and religion. This study has ethical approval from the University of Western Australia.
Aim
The aims of this project are twofold; first, determine the strength of the relationship between anxiety, including death anxiety and dreams or nightmares. Second, explore the mediating factor that religion may have on the relationship between anxiety and dreams or nightmares.
Participation and eligibility
You must be over the age of 18 years and be able to speak English to participate in this study.
Protocol
Your involvement in the study will include:
The completion of an online self-report survey. The survey aims to characterise your dreams or nightmares, sleep quality and risk of disorders, anxiety and religious beliefs/practices. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete and includes the following sections: demographics, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Disturbing Dream and Nightmare Severity Index, Dream Questionnaire (MADRE), General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) scale, Death Anxiety Beliefs and Behaviours Scale, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS), Spiritual Practices Questionnaire, Typical Dreams Questionnaire and most recent dream report.
Right of Withdrawal
You should understand that your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You may choose to withdraw from the study at any time for any reason, without prejudice. If you choose to do so, there will be no compromise in the relationship between you and the investigators. When you commence the online survey, you will be asked to provide informed consent, indicating that you are willing to complete the previously mentioned questionnaires.
Confidentiality
Your involvement in this study will be confidential; only the researchers will have access to your individual data. A study report may be submitted for publication, but individual participants will not be identifiable. At no stage will your individual data be given to anyone.
Data
Data will be collected and stored on REDCap, a secure data capture and storage platform designed for research. Only the investigators listed will have access to the data collected. The data will be stored and backed up for a period of 7 years. All data will be de-identified for the purpose of statistical analysis, and no individual information will be shared. The research team will ensure we store data in the UWA Institutional Research Data Store (IRDS) or equivalent University-approved Research data store". No data will be stored on personal computers or laptops. Summary results from the collected data will be presented in the form of research publications and conference presentations.
